ENRIQUETA FUENTES
I don’t think I’m what most people picture when imagining an artist. I don’t make art recreationally. I’m not someone whose head is bursting with ideas on what my next art piece will be. I am not a creator. But I do engage in artistic practices. I am a very analytical person and one of my favourite things to do is absorb art around me. I always have an opinion. Any occasion wherein I get to visit a museum or a gallery is a very fun time indeed. I live and breathe the art that surrounds my life; fundamentally, I am an artist.
Art history in particular is an aspect of the art world that fascinates me, and it is a major source of inspiration for this piece. The piece is meant to evoke the visual experience of looking at a painting from the baroque era, when artists had mastered the technique of tenebrism, a style which uses very dark darks and light lights, with saturated colours. When looking through the eyehole in my installation, the viewer sees the pitch-black interior of the booth with only the light of the chandelier to illuminate the materials.
The chandelier itself is something I’ve been working on for years now.
